Cubana airlines destinations
The flag carrier Cubana de Aviacion announced that it will resume flights between Havana and Buenos Aires as of November 20. The airline will also include a weekly stopover in Cayo Coco starting December 27.
Cayo Coco has had a direct link with Argentina for three decades. In 2019, Cubana de Aviacion carried 13,560 passengers between Buenos Aires and Cuba, of which 8,530 ended up in Cayo Coco and the rest continued on to Havana.
Last week, Cubana announced that domestic flights would continue to be cancelled and ground transportation services (mainly buses) would be used instead, as Cubana would not be able to keep its short-range aircraft in operation.
Regarding Cubana de Aviación, Guevara said that “the technical availability of the fleet is no secret that it is affected, because the acquisition of spare parts to keep the aircraft in flight has been very limited”.
To maintain domestic flights, the Cuban company has had to lease foreign aircraft and crew members. The May 18, 2018 crash of the Mexican operator Global Air’s flight on the Havana-Holguín route on behalf of Cubana, which resulted in 112 deaths, was the most serious in the island’s civil aviation history.

Cuba reopens its doors to international tourism on Monday, heading towards a new normality, seeking to oxygenate its battered economy, which is going through the most serious crisis in three decades. The expected reopening of Cuba to international tourism on Monday, November 15, coincides with celebrations for the 502nd anniversary of Havana, the return of primary school students to the classroom and the call by the opposition platform Archipelago for a civic protest march seeking political change on the island.

On that October 6, 1976, Virgen Verdecia Sanchez was told that flight CU-455 was delayed. She had arrived at the “José Martí” airport in Havana to meet her husband, but she had to return home. She waited for him, until she knew she would never see him again. “I never forget him, but this is a very difficult date for me, it’s as if I were living that day.”
On October 1st, the Canadian airline Air Transat resumed commercial operations with the province of Holguín through the Frank País García International Airport, which had been interrupted for approximately eight months. About 120 passengers arrived in the Holguin capital from Toronto in Canada.
The Canadian airline OWG will fly to Cuba starting in November, with operations connecting Montreal and Toronto with Jardines del Rey, Santa María Key (via Santa Clara) and Holguín, informed the Corporación de la Aviación Cubana S.A. The recently created airline will link these places, which shows the growing interest of Canadians in Cuba as a destination.
