Damien of Molokai, SS.CC., also known as Father Damien, whose birth name was Jozef de Veuster (Tremelo, Kingdom of Belgium, January 3, 1840 – Molokai, Kingdom of Hawaii, April 15, 1889) was a Belgian Catholic missionary of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts, who dedicated his life to the care of lepers on the island of Molokai.

Jozef de Veuster was born in Tremelo (Belgium), son of a farmer couple. He studied at a Catholic school, and later entered as a novice of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts (also known as Picpus, after the name of the street in Paris where it was founded). Following in the footsteps of his brother Augustus, who adopted the name Panfilo in the congregation, Joseph (Jozef) began his novitiate in Louvain (Leuven) under the name Damien on February 2, 1859. In 1863, his brother Augustus, who had been assigned to the mission in the Hawaiian Islands, was stricken with typhus, which made it impossible for him to travel. Damien obtained permission from the Superior General in Paris to replace him. In November 1863, Damien left Bremen (Germany) on the ship “R. M. Wood” for the archives of the archdiocese of Hawaii. M. Wood” bound for the Hawaiian Archipelago in the Pacific Ocean.
