Knives Out had its world premiere at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, and was released in the United States on November 27, 2019 by Lionsgate. The film received critical acclaim, particularly for its screenplay, direction and acting, and grossed $309.2 million worldwide against a $40 million budget. At the 77th Golden Globe Awards, the film received three nominations in the Musical or Comedy category: Best Picture, Best Actor for Craig and Best Actress for De Armas. It also received nominations for Best Original Screenplay at the 73rd British Academy Film Awards and the 92nd Academy Awards. It was also selected by the American Film Institute and the National Board of Review as one of the ten best films of 2019.

Okay, I’ll start with the cast. Daniel Craig playing the detective could have killed the movie after more than a decade playing James Bond. Chris Evans, the very famous Captain America, could have done the same playing the rebel in the family. And it’s also striking to see Ana de Armas among the leading cast considering she came out of Antena 3’s El Internado. It is a cast perhaps a bit risky.

There are other very characteristic and important elements for the climate of intrigue and mystery that the director recreates. For example, the saturation and colors. Just look at the poster of the film: the costumes of the actors, the set, the typography of the film’s title, highlighted in yellow… It favors the director’s argument a lot along with the photography, which has an impressive quality, and the combination between the almost novelistic sets and the actuality is brilliant.

But Johnson has not only worked with his team and cast to create brilliant sets, locations, lighting, costumes and characters. The plot is an original script by the director himself. A detective plot with the necessary dose of comedy so that the investigation does not lose importance or seem an excuse to develop eccentric characters. The investigation remains the main plot of the film, but with a dash of comedy, and the result is almost masterful.
