‘Heaven’s Gate’ is divided into three distinct parts, with James Averill as the central protagonist -a Kris Kristofferson totally devoted, in one of the best compositions of his career, probably the most heartfelt and full of strength-, in three moments of his long life, separated by three powerful and suggestive ellipses that invite the viewer to take sides, to do that increasingly reviled exercise: to think. La puerta del cielo’ is a film that shows how cyclical life is, a life that is not easy and with few moments to be happy.
The first half hour is a graduation, Averill’s graduation from Harvard in 1870. There, among great words – the different speeches of Joseph Cotten and John Hurt – the joy of the prosperous future, which is about to begin, is celebrated in a great dance around a tree. Young people, not knowing what that future will bring, dance without any other concern. Averill dares a woman who has caught his eye. The aforementioned round dance will be reproduced later in two very different situations.

Vittorio De Sica was one of the greatest Italian directors in history, key in Italian neorealism with films like Bicycle Thief (1948) or Miracle in Milan (1951). He was also an actor in many others, such as the wonderful The General of La Rovere (1959), which I highly recommend. And he directed others, such as La puerta del cielo, which I will not recommend.
Mostly because I have not seen it. It’s not my doing, it’s very difficult to find and almost nobody has seen it. It was finished filming in 1945 and it is said that its quality is questionable. What is interesting is its filming.
Heaven’s Gate is one of those bad movies whose production contains a great story. Well, several, with different names: De Sica, a certain Pratelli, Maria Mercader, Goebbels, Pius XII, Giovanni Montini (the future Paul VI) … and a lot of Jewish extras.
The film was financed by the Vatican, which vetoed the distribution of the film and practically buried it. Only three copies remain, two kept in the Vatican archives and a third in the possession of Christian De Sica, son of the director.
