Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus is an American circus that was created from the merger of Ringling Brothers Circus and Barnum & Bailey Circus. It is currently the largest and most famous of all American circuses, performing continuously since 1871.
Barnum died in 1891. Bailey purchased the circus from his widow. He organized many successful tours throughout the eastern United States until taking the circus to Europe on December 27, 1897, beginning a tour that would last until 1902.
More than 100 people died. The great irony of the fire was that it occurred under canvas. The crowd realized that their safety depended largely on getting out of there or ducking outside the tent, under the flanks of the tent. Some of the dead remain unidentified despite modern DNA identification techniques.
One fact that came to light in the investigation into the tragedy was that the tent was not fireproof. Ringling Brothers had requested the Army, who had absolute priority for the material, to sell the product to treat their tent with more flame retardant liquid. The Army refused their request. Despite this, the circus management was charged with negligence and several Ringling executives were jailed for the Hartford fire.
