Telecinco premiered Gran Hermano VIP: El Desafío (Big Brother VIP: The Challenge), a reality competition based on the well-known show of the private network, Gran Hermano, which had a differentiating element: 12 celebrities as new tenants of the house in Guadalix de la Sierra (Madrid).

Gran Hermano VIP (como se conoce por sus siglas GH VIP) es una serie de televisión tipo reality emitida en España por Telecinco y producida por Endemol. Es la versión para famosos de Gran Hermano y forma parte de la franquicia Gran Hermano desarrollada por primera vez en Holanda. La primera edición del programa se emitió en 2004[1] Hasta septiembre de 2019 se han emitido 7 ediciones del programa.
La mecánica del concurso es esencialmente la misma que la del Gran Hermano original. Una serie de diferentes Housemates, celebridades con diferentes grados de fama, son encerrados juntos en una casa, donde el público televidente puede observarlos y votarlos para que salgan de la Casa como ellos decidan. Los compañeros de casa viven aislados del mundo exterior en una casa construida a medida con objetos cotidianos, como neveras y un jardín. La casa también incluye cámaras y micrófonos en la mayoría de las habitaciones para grabar toda la actividad de la casa. El único lugar en el que los concursantes pueden estar alejados de los demás es la sala del diario, donde pueden expresar sus verdaderos sentimientos. El ganador es el último concursante que queda en la casa y recibe un gran premio en metálico. Los concursantes son desalojados semanalmente por el público.
