After Pilcher decides to cut the power at Wayward Pines – with deadly repercussions – Ethan and Kate take the initiative to make sure everyone is out of harm’s way. Meanwhile, Nurse Pam confronts Pilcher on his decision and tries to convince him to reconsider Ethan and Kate’s plan for an attack and the first generation tries to protect the future of Wayward Pines by taking matters into their own hands, Pilcher puts Pam to sleep for betraying her and the guards order her back awake, while Ethan stays in the elevator arming the bomb to take out the abbies and he sacrifices himself to save the people of Wayward Pines by dying with all the abbies. Ben wakes up after going into a coma to discover that all the efforts for a different society have been in vain, since the first generation rebelled against the adults by cryogenizing them and taking control of the town, with the same ideals as David Pilcher.

The trick of Wayward Pines, that which sets it apart from all the aforementioned series, is that it is not afraid of mystery. The surprise was not that it had a huge hook. Its protagonist, Ethan Burke, has a car accident and finds himself in a town where all the inhabitants live under observation, unable to leave, with no contact with the outside world and unable to talk about their past, with new identities that they must assume by force. Curiosity piqued, of course. The most important thing was not that it offered answers. In a series that has the privilege of ending in conditions, it is normal. But what was shocking was that it offered the answers halfway through its ten-episode season, which was conceived as a miniseries.

Showrunner Chad Hodge took advantage of the nature of the story, drawn from the novel of the same name written by Blake Crouch, to offer a tale with hooks but where the essence of the series did not reside in that hook. He sold a promise and, once he laid his cards on the table, went on with his tale. It is so rare that a series dares to break out of its own mold to let the story flow, to live a complete metamorphosis, that we must applaud the efforts of Shyamalan, Hodge and the FOX channel. And Melissa Leo, who is especially good when she sets out to unsettle the viewer.
